The Cruel Facts About Childhood Cancer

-- Close to 13,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each year.  This number is increasing over time and the cause is unknown.

-- Cancer is the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S.  Cancer kills more kids than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes and AIDS combined.

--  While many adult cancers can be attributed to lifestyle choices, the cause of childhood cancers is unknown and therefore can not be prevented.

--  Approximately 70% of children with cancer participate in clinical trials to receive treatment while only 3% of adults do.

--  Only 3% of the budget of the National Cancer Institute goes to research for pediatric cancers.

--  Because there is little funding, and therefore research available, many children are treated on protocols developed for adults.  These harsh treatments leave serious side effects in our children such as infertility and hearing loss.

-- Childhood cancer can have dire financial effects on a family.  Treatment can run into the millions of dollars and taking care of a child with cancer is a full time job. Often one parent has to leave a paid position to care for their child with cancer.

-- Insurance often does not fully cover physical rehabilitation from surgery or new, promising cancer treatments for some childhood cancers leaving families to host yard sales and bake sales to cover medical bills.
